Setting up a greenhouse is an exciting milestone for any gardener. Before you can start growing summer vegetables and nurturing seedlings, you need a reliable foundation. At Ecospaces Norfolk and Norwich Landscapers, we know that a strong base ultimately determines the lifespan of your glasshouse.
We recently completed a highly technical greenhouse perimeter base project in Little Ellingham, Attleborough, Norfolk. In this post, we will share the specific technical details behind a long-lasting foundation and explain why this particular base design keeps your greenhouse secure year after year. The Little Ellingham Perimeter Base Project: Building a Strong Foundation
A greenhouse acts like a large sail in the wind. Without proper anchoring, heavy gusts can easily warp the delicate frame or shatter the glass panels. For our recent project in Little Ellingham, we designed a custom concrete perimeter base tailored to the specific soil conditions of the site.
When constructing a base like this, we always follow strict technical recommendations to guarantee success. We strongly recommend pouring 100mm of concrete on either side of the greenhouse frame. This creates a total perimeter width of 200mm.
This generous width is crucial. It distributes the weight of the heavy glass and metal structure evenly across the ground. More importantly, this buffer prevents the concrete from cracking under pressure or minor ground shifts.
We also dig deep to protect your investment. For true durability over time, we pour the concrete to a depth of 400mm. Frost heave and settling topsoil can easily ruin a shallow foundation, leading to a twisted greenhouse frame. By excavating down to 400mm, we ensure the base sits firmly below the frost line. This depth guarantees the foundation remains completely stable regardless of freezing winters or wet spring seasons. Why Invest in a Greenhouse Perimeter Base?
You might wonder why you should choose a perimeter base instead of pouring a full concrete slab. A perimeter base offers several distinct advantages that serious gardeners truly appreciate:
